Mads Tolling

Friday, March 1

Mads Tolling is a Grammy Award-winning violinist and former member of both Turtle Island String Quartet and bassist Stanley Clark’s band. Originally from Denmark, when he’s not touring internationally Mads lives in the Bay Area. This show marks the third time he’s played at Fifth Street and we’re thrilled to have him back. For this show Mads will be joined by Bay Area pianist John R. Burr, who has toured extensively with Maria Muldaur and the Alison Brown Quartet. Mads and John began collaborating in 2015 as a duo, part of the eclectic Bay Area jazz scene. In 2020 they began recording their first album, “Ramblin’”, finally finished and released last year on Blue Coast Records. It features creative arrangements of songs from all corners of the music world, including Toto, Ornette Colman, Charlie Parker, John McLaughlin and some Mads and John originals. Come hear them perform live from this album. In the meantime, watch them performing together here and listen to some tracks from the album here.

Mark Schatz & Bryan McDowell

Saturday, March 2

This multi-generational duo presents a broad spectrum of American acoustic music. Their new CD, “Grit & Polish,” went to #1 on the DJ Folk Charts in 2021. Both Schatz and McDowell are multi-instrumentalists who sail seamlessly from old-time to bluegrass, from folk to swing, playing and singing old and new tunes and songs, including their own original compositions. North Carolina native Bryan McDowell grew up in a rich musical environment where he learned everything from Doc Watson to Charlie Parker. Mark tours and records with a who’s who of the acoustic music world, including Bela Fleck, Nickel Creek, Tony Rice, and Tim O’Brien. The two worked together in the Claire Lynch Band from 2009 to 2014, and they’re excited to present a new, dynamic show which of course will include some of Mark’s colorful hambone and Appalachian clog dancing. Listen to some music here.
