Max’s Midnight Kitchen–Wednesday, April 27
Doors at 7 music at 7:30  $20 (all money goes to the musicians)

Max’s Midnight Kitchen is a string band based in Portland, Oregon. Their music is the songs and harmonies of Matt Takiff (acoustic guitar) and Daniel Nickerson (banjo and electric guitar), combining folk, bluegrass, and country themes with a healthy dose of surrealism and humor. For the Fifth Street show, the Kitchen includes singer Hannah Rosencrans. From travels up and down the roads of the US and across international borders, their songs tell stories of wily characters and paint pictures of the world as it goes by.

In addition to their original material, Max’s Midnight Kitchen performs songs from American old-time folk and bluegrass traditions, along with some rock and country classics thrown in. The full feeling of their songs and stories comes through loud and clear. Here’s a link to a video.

Guy Klucevsek–Saturday, April 30
Doors at 7 music at 7:30  $20

Guy Klucevsek is one of the world’s foremost accordionists. He’s an amazing virtuoso, composer, and interpreter. Here is a rare opportunity to hear him perform live, solo.

Some other people talk about Guy:

“Forget everything you thought you knew about the accordion.” Seattle Weekly
“Klucevsek is a trailblazing virtuoso.” The Wall Street Journal
“A rebel with an accordion…Klucevsek combines poker-faced wit and imagination with command of his instrument, forcing you to re-think the accordion’s limitations.” Downbeat
“Klucevsek is a musical Orient Express whose themes pass from Hungarian gypsy to Slovenian waltz to Middle Eastern wail without stopping at the borders.” Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
“A remarkable performer on a remarkable instrument. Klucevsek writes the world’s most abnormal “normal” music, like the Godzilla of accordions. No other composer on the scene is so untouched by fashion.” Village Voice

Guy doesn’t play on the West Coast very often. He’s been at Fifth Street once before, for one of the best shows we’ve had. Don’t miss this chance to hear him.
