Kora Feder and Justin Farren

Saturday, May 31

There’s not too many singer-songwriters who get to play at Fifth Street. We booked Kora Feder a couple years ago because she showed individuality, emotional, high-quality singing and seriously good songwriting skill, and we’ve asked her back. We love her mom (Rita Hosking) and Kora’s work has her own impact and craft. She brings her own maturity to playing the guitar and writing songs that confront contemporary issues. She’s traveled and performed internationally, received numerous awards, and produced two highly acclaimed records. In Sevens charted on US Folk Radio for four months, with NPR highlighting its emotional quality. Her song “I’d Be a Maria” has over 1.5 million Spotify streams. This year she released Some Kind of Truth, an introspective album produced by Justin Farren, who’s playing with her at this show, addressing life in 2020s America. Raised in Northern California, Feder now performs globally and lives in Detroit.

Justin Farren is a builder–of buildings, songs, and sounds. A storyteller with a great voice, serious guitar skill, good humor and spirit. Don’t miss this show.

John Reischman & Jacob Joliff

Saturday, June 7

Grammy Award-winning musician John Reischman has been a foundational mandolinist, composer, bandleader, and musical educator in bluegrass and North American roots and folk music since emerging from the ‘new acoustic’ bluegrass music scene of the Bay Area in the 1980s. He and his band, The Jaybirds, continually sell out halls and festivals around the country. A member of the groundbreaking Tony Rice Unit, Reischman’s mastery of bluegrass, old-time, swing, and multiple Latin American musical styles, coupled with an old master’s sense of tone, taste, and musicality, has brought him a global reputation as one of the finest mandolinists of his era.

Jacob Jolliff is one of the world’s premier contemporary mandolinists. He graduated from Berklee College of Music, and soon thereafter won the USA National Mandolin Championship. A fixture of the bluegrass scene, he has performed and collaborated with Béla Fleck, Tony Trischka, Michael Daves, Grant Gordy, Wes Corbett, and Alex Hargreaves. Throughout his 20s, he toured as a member of the groups Joy Kills Sorrow and Yonder Mountain String Band. His own ensemble, The Jacob Jolliff Band, is one of the most cutting-edge progressive bluegrass groups on the scene today.

This show is a great chance to hear two of the finest Americana performers playing today.

The Alum Ridge Boys & Ashlee

Wednesday, June 18

(We can’t say it better than their website):

Bluegrass from the Blue Ridge
Mining the fertile common ground between bluegrass, early country music, and traditional mountain music, The Alum Ridge Boys & Ashlee are Virginia’s torchbearers of the old-time sound. Featuring the classic quintet of fiddle, banjo, mandolin, guitar, and bass, the band comprises five masterful musicians and singers who have immersed themselves in the dance music traditions of the Blue Ridge region and developed a deeply rooted old time bluegrass sound. Deep appreciation for Country and “Hillbilly” music of the ’30s, ’40s, and ’50s enables the band to craft tasteful original songs and instrumentals that blend seamlessly alongside the classics.

Their powerful harmony singing and energetic instrumentals have captivated audiences around the globe and helped the band to win many awards including first prize in the old time band contest at the 85th Annual Old Fiddlers’ Convention in Galax, Virginia and the bluegrass band contest at the 51st Mount Airy Fiddlers’ Convention in North Carolina. Band members have also won a slew of individual awards including first place bluegrass banjo at Galax, first place old time fiddle at the Appalachian String Band Festival in Clifftop, WV, and first prize in the 29th Annual MerleFest Chris Austin Songwriting Contest. The Alum Ridge Boys & Ashlee cut no corners when it comes to real, hard hitting, old time country music – an approach that is quickly gaining them loyal followers far beyond the reaches of their Virginia mountain home.

Listen to some tunes here.
