Nash / Griffin / Landon–Songwriter’s Circle: Saturday, July 20

Named one of “50 Transcendent Acoustic Guitarists” by Guitar Player magazine, James Nash has been described as “graceful but fiery… elegant and colorful… rampantly eclectic,”  and praised for his “near-ideal balance of irreverence, chops, discipline, and originality” (Chicago Tribune). James commands the stage with subtlety and bravado, and his genre-bending approach seamlessly unites the worlds of rock, bluegrass, and jazz into a sound that is both deeply soulful and technically remarkable.

Andrew Griffin started the band Felsen after his 2006 cancer diagnosis, which led to the release of Felsen’s first album “Accidental Drowning” in 2009. A unique singer/guitarist, Griffin’s solo work highlights his strong individual voice and outlook.

David Landon is a Bay Area premier guitarist and vocalist who has performed nationally and internationally. David has released 5 solo cds and has played on countless recordings for other artists throughout his 30-year musical career. Landon has come back to his first love of acoustic music, and his current performances cross musical boundaries ranging from foot-stomping blues to mellow and carefully crafted originals.

Together, the three friends and colleagues will swap stories and songs on a warm, captivating evening of community and good music.

Mads Tolling & Dave Macnab: Saturday, August 3

We’re thrilled to have internationally renowned Danish-American violinist and composer Mads Tolling back at Fifth Street. As a member of both bassist Stanley Clarke’s band and the celebrated Turtle Island Quartet, Mads won two Grammy Awards, and was nominated for a third. Mads has performed with Chick Corea, Ramsey Lewis, Kenny Barron, Paquito D’Rivera, Leo Kottke and Sergio & Odair Assad.

This evening Mads will collaborate with jazz guitarist, Dave Macnab. Dave is one of the first-call guitar players in the Bay Area, and he is currently the main guitar player for “Hamilton” at the Orpheum Theater. Dave performs as a guest artist with Symphony Orchestras around the Bay, and has worked with famous musicians such as Bob Weir, Barry Manilow and Brian McKnight.

Mads and Dave met eight years ago through the eclectic San Francisco jazz scene, and they have worked together as part of the Mads Tolling Quartet numerous times, including at Yoshi’s, SF Jazz and Yerba Buena Gardens.

For us they’ll perform songs from the Great American Songbook, a Danish folk song or two and a few of their own compositions. The two will pay special homage to Mads’ heroes growing up: jazz violinist Stephane Grappelli and “The Fiddling Viking” Svend Asmussen.

Don’t miss a rare opportunity to hear these amazing musicians in an intimate setting. Come join us on August 3 and in the meantime check out some violin and guitar duets from Mads’ recent album here.
