Ashley Broder Trio–Saturday, February 23

The Ashley Broder Trio carves out a unique sound within the “chamber folk” genre. Re-nowned instrumentalists Ashley Broder, Ben Schreiber, and Aria DiSalvio join forces to perform Broder’s originals and some traditional fiddle favorites. Mandolin, electric mandolin, fiddle, and cello weave melodies, textures, and harmonies to create a sound that has been described as “cinematic and transportive.” Hailed as a ‘mandolin phenomenon’ by the San Diego Tribune, Ashley’s compositions are the main staple of the trio. She crafts melodies and haunting harmonies that distinguish her works easily from the norm. Her other projects include an accordion/mandolin duo featured on the podcast “Welcome to Night Vale,” as well as the classical/folk trio Fire and Grace and Ash. Schreiber on fiddle and cellist DiSalvio bring their refined technique and cool harmonies to the show. Although the trio is new on the scene, they’re each at the top of their game and eager to create a reputation for the ensemble. Here’s a comment about Ashley’s album: “…so soft and subtle that many folks may not even realize how intricate and beautiful the music is…at a time when some musicians focus on volume, technology, and speed…these tracks come across as inspired and very, very focused.” Here’s a video of one tune, and you can see more of Ashley at ashbroder.com
