Fifth Street Farms is really happy to present three musicians from our favorite musical corners of the planet, among the U.S. and Sweden’s most respected young acoustic players. Masterful Swedish fiddler Lena Jonsson, mandolin wizard Dominick Leslie, and National Fiddle Champion and cellist Tristan Clarridge bridge the Atlantic with strong roots of Swedish and American traditional music. The music is playful and exuberant, exploring old and new songs and tunes of Sweden, Ireland, the Appalachian mountains, and beyond. Thanks to the support of Sweden’s Musikverket, they’re on a West Coast tour now and a Swedish tour in October.
All three grew up in a musical household, learning and absorbing music since just about the day they were born. Lena was raised in Hälsingland, Sweden, in a family where everyone plays the fiddle. Tristan grew up in a tipi in the mountains of northern California, attending fiddle camps all over the country and playing in his first fiddle contest at age 3. A native of Colorado, Dominick attended his first bluegrass festival at the age of 5 months, and has immersed himself in music ever since.
Lena Jonsson, curious and exuberant, began her musical journey at age 6, continuing on to study Swedish folk music at the Royal Music Academy in Stockholm. Active in Sweden’s progressive and creative music community, she has recorded on over twenty albums, received many performance and composing grants, and tours Sweden, Europe, and the US with her various bands.
Tristan Clarridge is a 5-time Grand National Fiddle Champion who began music studies at the age of two. He has toured the world as the cellist with Crooked Still, The Bee Eaters, Republic of Strings, and has performed with Mike Marshall, Darol Anger, Bruce Molsky, and Cape Breton fiddle star Natalie MacMaster. Inspired by revolutionaries such as Anger, Edgar Meyer and Bela Fleck, Tristan has found himself deep within a cello revolution.
Though only 26 years old, mandolinist Dominick Leslie has spent every one of those years immersed in bluegrass and acoustic music. He has studied with mandolin masters David Grisman, Mike Marshall and Chris Thile, and has won numerous mandolin championships. He has toured with The Brotet, The Bee Eaters, The Grant Gordy Quartet, Noam Pikelny, and The Deadly Gentlemen.
